A Catholic priest in Ecuador was delivering Mass when a shocking tragedy unfolded in front of his congregation.
The service was being livestreamed, capturing the moment everything suddenly went wrong.
What happened next left worshippers rushing to his aid.
Heavy crucifix suddenly broke loose
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez was celebrating an evening Mass at Perpetuo Socorro Church in Guayaquil on October 17 when a heavy crucifix suddenly broke loose from the wall above him.
The service was being livestreamed, and the heartbreaking moment was captured on camera.

Sánchez was standing before the congregation, continuing his message, when the large cross came crashing down and struck him.
Worshippers immediately rushed to help and called emergency services. Sadly, Father Sánchez died from his injuries.
Last words
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil later confirmed his death, saying the priest had served as parish priest at Perpetuo Socorro Church. He was also a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.
But it was the words Sánchez had spoken only moments earlier that have stayed with many who heard them.
He had been reflecting on how quickly life passes and reminding those gathered that, one day, every one of us will face death.

“One day, all of us here will also die,” he said.
He went on to encourage the congregation to think about how they spend the precious time they are given — with God, with their spouses, their children, their families and the people around them.
“The quality time we give to God, to our brothers and sisters, to our husbands, wives, children, and family – that time is the best spent.”
Moments later, he asked God to bless the congregation.
What caused the fall?
It remained unclear Monday what caused the crucifix to come loose and fall. Church officials had not publicly provided an explanation for the collapse.
For those who witnessed the tragedy, the timing of his words has made the loss even more difficult to process. But members of the community have also urged people not to interpret his death as a punishment or claim to know why it happened.
One Catholic who reflected on the tragedy offered a different message: death should not be an opportunity to judge or search for someone to blame, but a moment to pray, show compassion and trust in God’s mercy.
That may be the most fitting way to remember Father Sánchez.
Not by trying to explain the tragedy, but by remembering the message he was sharing when his own life was suddenly cut short.
His words were about something simple that can be easy to forget: the time we give to the people we love is precious.
And for many who heard his final message, that reminder will likely stay with them for a very long time.
May Father Patricio Sánchez rest in peace.
