Grief campaigner was found dead on same beach where her 18-year-old son died six years earlier

A grieving mother was found dead on the same beach where her teenage son died six years earlier.

The body of Charmaine George was found on the shoreline at Portreath Beach in Cornwall on October 5.

Ms George, 52, had spent the last six years campaigning for grieving families and working alongside charity The Good Grief Trust.

She set up a chain of Good Grief Pop Up Cafes to help people who have suffered bereavements, and in 2021 she won The Caroline Flack Mental Health Hero Award for her efforts.

Her son Ewan had died at the age of 18 in May 2020 on the same stretch of coastline, with the teenager’s body found at the bottom of cliffs after a night of camping with friends.

The coroner at the inquest into his death ruled there was not enough evidence to support a conclusion of suicide.

Ms George’s body was found at the same place on Lighthouse Hill, which she previously described as Ewan’s ‘happy place’.

Police, coastguard crews and rescue teams were called to the scene for a welfare check call, but she was pronounced dead at the beach and her body was recovered.

Ms George, who was born in Islington, north London, also worked as a travel agent in addition to her role as a grief campaigner.

Following Ms George’s death The Good Grief Trust paid tribute to the mother from Pool, near Redruth, in Cornwall.

In a tribute written on their Facebook page, the organisation said: ‘Charmaine had tragically experienced the death of her young son Ewan and was passionate to help others find vital support.

‘We are so sorry to share this news about a past member of our team, who sadly died earlier this week.

‘She had tragically experienced the death of her young son Ewan and was passionate to help others find vital support.’

It added: ‘Charmaine George helped to create new Good Grief Pop Up Cafes with us in Cornwall where she lived and develop our project elsewhere as well.

‘In 2021, we were extremely proud to be invited to The Sun’s Who Cares Wins Awards where Charmaine won The Caroline Flack Mental Health Hero Award for starting our Cafe.

‘What a proud evening for Charmaine and for us all.

‘She helped to improve access to vital support services with the launch of our Good Grief Pop Up Cafes in Cornwall, and helped many others find a way forward with their life, after losing someone they loved.

‘We send her daughter Libby, and her family and friends, all our love and support at this incredibly difficult time.’

Assistant coroner for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Guy Davies said investigations remained ongoing and the medical cause of her death had not yet been ascertained. He said a full inquest is likely to take place next year.

Ms George previously spoke of her son’s death, saying: ‘At his inquest, the coroner recorded an open verdict so we will never know whether or not it was suicide.

‘Lighthouse Hill was his happy place. He used to go there a lot with his girlfriend to watch the sunset as it’s very beautiful.’

In a previous statement regarding the mother’s death, Devon and Cornwall police said: ‘We were called following a report of a woman’s body being located on the shoreline off Lighthouse Hill, Portreath.

‘The body of the woman in her 50s was recovered by Coastguard.

‘Her next of kin has been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for HM Coroner.’
